Building upon the success of the previous courses on power system dynamics, CRESYM offers a more specific, but very timely, course on Power System Oscillations. This course offer is built upon the same spirit: a practical workshop, with deep participation of the attendees, and opportunities to raise questions.
Detailed program of the training:
Training title | Power System Oscillations |
Instructor | Prof. Luis Rouco
Professor at Comillas University, Madrid, Spain Prof. Rouco is a leading international expert in the field of power system oscillations. He has advised several TSOs and electric utilities in the field throughout the years. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Distinguished Member of Cigre. Stanford University has included him in the list of the world’s top 2% scientists in his field. |
Target audience | Young engineers, junior researchers, and more advanced engineers who wish to strengthen their knowledge. Participants in the previous workshops organized by CRESYM on power systems dynamics, control, and stability, who would like to deep dive into the topic of power system oscillations, are strongly encouraged to join. |
Prerequisites | Basic knowledge of power systems (operation principles, components, etc.) and notions of power system stability. |
Date and duration | December 11th -12th 2025
8 hours: 13:30-18:00 & 9:00-12:30 (+ 2h focus case 13:30-15:30) |
Number of attendees | Maximum 12 (hopefully from various companies or academia) in order to foster interactions between the instructor and audience |
Location | Square de Meeûs 38/40 1000 Brussels
@ Mitwit, 4th floor |
IT | Each attendee must bring his/her own laptop |
Language | English |
Program / description | Power system oscillations are of great concern in many power systems, as power exchanges have increased due to the integration of power markets. The increased penetration of inverter-based resources in the power system adds a challenge. Recent events in the Continental European system, particularly the blackout of the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, have shown that the security of the power system may be at risk due to poorly damped oscillations.
The course presents the fundamentals of power system oscillations. It starts with simplified models and moves on to more detailed ones. The physical meaning of the mathematical tools used is emphasized. It also provides the fundamentals of damping devices. |
Logistics | Lecture notes, refreshments, and snacks will be provided.
Travel, meal & accommodation expenses will not be included, but the attendees are invited to attend the dinner offered by CRESYM on the evening of December 11th. All details about the venue and advice for accommodation will be provided prior to the scheduled date. |
Price | 500 €/attendee for CRESYM members
900 €/attendee for other organisations |
