Training course “Advanced Power System Stability”
Event Date:
17 April 2026
Event Time:
9h00
Event Location:
Barcelona, ETSEIB, UPC, Barcelona, 08028, Spain
Event Description
Building upon the success of the previous courses on power system stability and power system oscillations, CRESYM expands its offering with a course on advanced stability analysis in power systems with significant penetration of resources based on Power Electronics. The same spirit is followed: a practical workshop, with deep participation of the attendees, and opportunities to raise questions. A single day is provided during cresROADS with the plan to expand it to a 2-day training in subsequent sessions.
| Training course title | Advanced Power System Stability: Modern frequency domain stability analysis and advanced RMS |
| Instructor (s) | Ilhan Kocar
Full Professor at Polytechnique Montréal Short bio: Dr. Kocar has 25 years of diverse experience in the power engineering field across industry, academia, and major regions including North America, Asia, and Europe. He is a full professor at Polytechnique Montréal and President of DIgSILENT North America Inc. His research aims to address critical challenges in integrating renewable energy sources into power systems. He is an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. |
| Target audience | Young engineers, junior researchers, and more advanced engineers who wish to strengthen their knowledge. Participants in the previous workshops organized by CRESYM on power systems dynamics, control, and stability, who would like to deep dive into the topic are strongly encouraged to join. |
| Prerequisites | Basic knowledge of power systems (operation principles, components, etc.), notions of power system stability, familiarity with industrial grade simulation tools. |
| Date and duration | April 17th 2026
6 hours: 3h theory, 3h practical hands-on exercises |
| Number of attendees | maximum 12 (hopefully from various companies or academia) in order to foster interactions between the instructor and audience |
| Location | UPC premises, Barcelona |
| IT | Each attendee must bring his/her own laptop |
| Language | English |
| Program / description | Overview: This intensive 6-hour short course addresses the critical stability and protection challenges facing modern power systems with high penetrations of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs). As the grid evolves, traditional analysis methods are often insufficient to capture the unique dynamics of IBRs, such as fast control actions, limited fault current contributions, and non-linear behaviours.
What You Will Learn: The course focuses on Impedance-Based Stability Analysis (IBSA) and clarifies the crucial differences between EMT-based Frequency Scans (time-domain simulations) and Frequency Sweeps (frequency-domain analysis). Participants will bridge the gap between stability and protection by exploring the latest classifications and analysis techniques. Although demonstrations and exercises will be conducted using PowerFactory, the core concepts, methodologies, and analysis techniques presented are tool-agnostic and applicable across various simulation platforms. |
| Logistics | Slides for notes, refreshments, and snacks will be provided.
Travel, meal & accommodation expenses will not be included, but the attendees are invited to attend the dinner offered by CRESYM on the evening of 16th April. All details about the venue and advice for accommodation will be provided prior to the scheduled date. |
| Price | 300 €/attendee (per day of training) for CRESYM members
