Program:

Training course title “Power system oscillations”
Teacher Prof. Luis Rouco
Target audience Young engineers, junior researchers, and more advanced engineers who wish to strengthen their knowledge. Participants in the previous workshops organized by CRESYM on power systems dynamics, control, and stability, who would like to deep dive into the topic of power system oscillations, are strongly encouraged to join.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of power systems (operation principles, components, etc.) and notions of power system stability.
Duration 8 hours: 13:30-18:00 & 9:00-12:30 (+ 2h focus case 13:30-15:30 tbc)
Number of attendees Maximum 12 (possibly from diverse companies) in order to favour interactions with the audience
Location On site training, location to be determined based on the origin of the attendees
IT Each attendee must bring his/her own laptop

Program / description Power system oscillations are of great concern in many power systems, as power exchanges have increased due to the integration of power markets. The increased penetration of inverter-based resources in the power system adds a challenge. Recent events in the Continental European system, particularly the blackout of the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, have shown that the security of the power system may be at risk due to poorly damped oscillations.

The course presents the fundamentals of power system oscillations. It starts with simplified models and moves on to more detailed ones. The physical meaning of the mathematical tools used is emphasized. It also provides the fundamentals of damping devices. In addition, it provides a flavour of current industrial challenges and practices.

Part I: Fundamentals

  • Stability concepts
  • Oscillations in the classical model of a single-machine infinite bus test system
  • Oscillations in the classical model of multi-machine test system
  • Oscillations in the detailed model of a system
  • Design of power system stabilizers

Part II: Applications

  • Oscillations in the Continental European system
  • Damping oscillations with HVDC links
